SCRIPT FOR MEETING YOUR INNER CRITIC

FIRST ANSWER FOR YOURSELF A FEW INTRODUCTORY QUESTIONS:

·      WHAT ARE SOME THINGS YOUR INNER CRITIC TELLS YOU?

·      WHOSE INFLECTIONS DOES IT HAVE?

·      FROM WHERE IN YOUR PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY DOES ITS VOICE EMANATE?

NOW PULL IT OUT OF ITS USUAL HOME, AND WITH A STRAIGHT ARM, LET IT APPEAR IN YOUR PALM FACING YOU

ASK IT THESE QUESTIONS IN THIS ORDER:

1.        When did you take charge?

2.        Who put you in charge?

3.        Why are you still in charge?

4.        I would like to take charge for a while. Is that OK?

5.        What bad will happen if I take charge?

6.        I’m willing to take that risk. Will you step aside?

7.        Are you worried something bad will happen to you?

8.        What are you worried will happen to you?

9.        I promise I won’t annihilate you. Isn’t it tiring running the show?

10.  How would you like semi-retirement as my Occasional Ethical Adviser?

11.  This is important to me. Will you step aside for a while?

12.  If this experiment works, you will have fulfilled your original charter, which was to raise from a kid to a functional adult.

BEFORE RETURNING YOUR INNER CRITIC TO ITS USUAL HOME, ADD THIS:

·      Thank you for saving my life as a kid.
